The artificial lake of Koman

Komani, the lake created as an artificial aquifer in 1979 with the construction of the hydroelectric dam called at that time, “The light of the Party”. Koman Dam is one of the 10 highest dams of this type in Europe, with a height of 133 m and a length of 290 m, who has created a lake with a total volume of about 500 million m3 of water.

 About the Drin River 

 Komani Lake after the creation of the dam has already covered for nearly four decades the millions of years trace that the river Drin, had carved to create its bed. The Drin River is formed by the union of its two branches, the White Drin which originates in the area of ​​Peja-Kosovo and the Black Drin from Lake Ohrid – Macedonia, in the area of ​​Kukes – Albania, continuing as the only one through the mountainous region of Has, Tropoja and Shkodra.

From the geographical point of view, Drini borders to the south the massive block of the Albanian Alps. In Fierza, the beautiful Valbona river joins the Drin river. Further on the Nikaj-Mërtur (Tropojë) river and even further west, the amazing Shala river.

The elongated shape of the lake surface follows the contours of the valleys from which it is formed.

We have no other place in Albania where in such a small area you can see and explore a vertical landscape that goes from 170 to 1800-2400 meters.
