Dec 8, 2020 | Blogs from Albanian Alps

Theth, this wonderful unique mountainous village in Northern Albania that offers one of the most dramatic and most welcoming settings in the Land of Eagles, Albania. If that isn’t inviting enough for you then we are going to offer you some things to do in Thethi. But, before we head to facts we will have to introduce this beautiful village that will remind you of the movie Taken where Marko from Tropoja was wanted by Liam Neeson because he kidnapped his daughter. Okay, that is not inviting I guess. But, does the small unique stone church surrounded by the Albanian Alps, which is all over the internet ring a bell? Because, if that is not inviting, then come and see yourself. Moreover, Theth is Europe’s next big thing, one of the most scenic places in Europe according to me, who else. I mean, many people think the same.

Thethi is how Albanians call it, and you are probably going to mispronounce it but we love tourists, so we will let you get away with this. Beauty, nature, waterfall, glaciers, national park, wildlife, hiking, and whatever one who seeks adventure needs. In this article, we are going to show you 7 things you can do in Theth, and in case you need a guide to do them, give us a call, we are always there for you, even at 4 am when you are bored and scrolling through the internet for vacation plans that probably won’t happen.

The fabulous list of 7 things to do in Theth

The stone church

Visit the stone church that is in the heart of the village surrounded by mountains. This church was built in 1892. In 1917 the church was used as a school. On top of the church, you can see a wooden cross. During the communist era, it was used as a hospital.

Blue Eye

We Albanian’s love blue eyes apparently, as two of our most beautiful places have the same name, Blue Eye. Sorry, not Sorry. The Blue Eye is a hike away from Theth. The blue eye is a natural pool of turquoise blue water combined with a small waterfall that makes it even prettier. If it’s summer, swim in it, it’s probably very cold, but they say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Jokes aside, it’s good for your bones. And if it’s winter, we let you decide.

The Lock-in Tower

This tower has a lot of history and is one of my favorite places in Theth. The Tower of Nikoll Koçeku is a stone  tower is 400 hundred years old and has been there during many family feuds or Gjakemarrje. The Lock-in tower has small windows that those inside could see the enemies if they were approaching. People who were part of a family feud would hide there. Later on, years it was a prison. And now remains as a relic of history.

Hiking towards Valbona

For this one, we recommend you rest well the night before, put cucumber slices on your eyes, and get ready to walk for 5 to 6 hours up and down. The view will be worth it, the experience is 10/10, Valbona is 11/10 but the hike, well depends on your fitness level. We let you judge that.

Grunas Canyon

The Grunas Canyon has large carbon formations. The canyon is around 2 km long and 60 meters deep and varies from 2-3 meters to 30-40 meters wide. There is an incomparable beauty, and all the time, there is enough water to canoe sailing fans. The water of the Thethi River is crystal clear at any time and very cold. The visits to the site are not advised without local guides, or the appointment should be in groups. The Grunas Canyon was and remained a challenge for all foreign and Albanian tourists that are passionate about canyons.

The stone groves

The stone groves of Nderlysa are some rock formations created by the abundant flow of black river water descending from the village of Kaprre in Thethi valley. In the village of Kaprre, this water creates the Blue Eye hole, a beauty of nature that impresses every visitor. Their attraction is quite exciting and beautiful, as there are many different and unique forms of rose-colored. Most of them are plated and rounded and look like bathtubs made by an artist with perfect taste.

And last but not least enjoy the hospitality

Enjoy the hospitality because that is what Thethi is known for. They offer great, tasty, and traditional food. They love tourists and they will be there for you no matter what.

Visit Theth, and tell us what you think about it.
